About the school
St Thomas à Becket is an 11–16 Catholic secondary school serving Wakefield since 1967 – small enough for staff to know every student as an individual. Ofsted judged the school Good in all areas in March 2023, and in November 2025 the Catholic Schools Inspectorate judged it Outstanding in every area. In 2025, 45 per cent of students achieved grade 5 or above in English and mathematics. Annual productions, Music for Youth, a strong sporting programme including one of the few British Cycling-standard circuits in the north of England, Duke of Edinburgh and trips from Rome to Iceland sit alongside pilgrimages to Lourdes and Walsingham. Esse quam videri – to be, rather than to seem to be.
“Leaders have ensured a strong culture of safeguarding in which pupils feel happy and safe. They are proud to attend this school.”
— Ofsted, March 2023
