The BKCAT Book Awards

Children from across our primary schools gathered together to celebrate the launch of the BKCAT Book Awards and were lucky enough to be joined by children’s author AF Steadman.

Mr Barraclough, Mrs Chernenko and Mrs Humbles have been busy working with the Wakefield School Library Service to select 5 books for this year’s awards, which are:

  • The Last Wild Trilogy: The Last Wild by Piers Torday
  • Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick
  • Resist by Tom Palmer
  • Escape Room by Christopher Edge
  • Skandar and the Unicorn Thief by AF Steadman

Brand new copies of the books have been delivered to each of our twelve primary schools for the children to read.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the author of Skandar Thief, AF Steadman, for coming to the event to talk to us in-person; making the afternoon as informative and engaging as possible by sharing some secrets about her work as a writer and for being kind enough to sign some of the children’s copies of her book.

Children from across our primary schools gathered together again for this year’s final BKCAT Book Awards event, where the Grand Announcement to reveal this year’s winning book took place.

The day consisted of talks from “That Poetry Guy”, Craig Bradley, Trust CEO, Lesley Fitton, and video messages from 4 of the authors from this year’s selection of books: Piers Torday, Jennifer Killick, Tom Palmer and AF Steadman.

It was then announced that this year’s winning book is Skandar and the Unicorn Thief by AF Steadman!

Over the course of this year, Mr Barraclough, Mrs Chernenko and Mrs Humbles have been busy working with the Wakefield Schools Library Service, helping us to do all we can to foster a love and enthusiasm for reading and writing amongst our children. Our aim is to ensure that this becomes deep rooted both in our schools and in our pupil’s lives for time to come.
