We will remember them…
St Thomas a Becket’s Catholic Secondary school Wakefield has a long tradition of commemorating Armistice Day, remembering the fallen of two world wars and all conflicts since and praying for peace.
This year of course marked the centenary of the end of World War One, ‘the war to end all wars’. Tragically we know how far from the truth that statement is and much of our work as a school is to inspire and equip our community to the agents of peace in the world.
To mark the 100 year anniversary, Mrs Hale designed a poppy sculpture which formed the centerpiece of our assemblies and Collective Worship in the Hall. Each form contributed a string of poppies. The art work was also the backdrop for our Presentation Evening on 8th November – very fitting for the year group who initiated and led our ‘Somme 100 Day’ on 1st July 2016.
Mr Davidson returned from his retirement as our guest speaker and moved us to tears with his reflections on war, service and loss.
On Friday 9th November, the school gathered outside to formally share 2 minutes silence. As ever pupils responded with huge respect.
